On August 23, 2005, a tropical depression began to form over the Bahamas. Over the next few days, the depression gathered enough strength to earn the designation of a storm and subsequently named Tropical Storm Katrina.
At 5pm, The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida issued its first advisory about the tropical system that would soon become the devastating Hurricane Katrina.
